Abstract  In view of the large deformations of No.7 inclined shaft in Muzhailing tunnel on Lanzhou-Chongqing railway, construction control methods and deformations were classified and  the factors affecting the large deformation were discussed. Results indicated that high ground stresses and geological lithology were the main factors of deformation and geological structure was the subordinate one. The deformation development can be restrained effectively and the safety can be ensured by improving the construction technology and support rigidity, providing basis for the main tunnel construction.
