Abstract The Jiubao Tunnel passes through old Archaeozoic metamorphic strata with complex geology and soft surrounding rocks. During tunnel construction, mud and water outbursts were encountered several times resulting in damaged supports and delays to construction. The treatment principles of "pressure reduction by water discharging, grouting reinforcement and pipe-roofing support" and relative construction measures were adopted to make construction of the tunnel safe and efficient.
