Abstract In light of the geological conditions of the Beigushan tunnel, the differences of force applied on the surrounding rock and the supporting structure, as well as the relative deformation law concerning the exit section, by different construction methods were compared. An analysis was performed and a construction method was selected based on the construction procedures and characteristics. It was concluded that the Beigushan tunnel should be constructed by the method of arched heading with reserved core soil, since this scheme not only complies with tunnel design specifications and meets the requirements of stability, but is also simple and cost effective.
