Abstract Tunneling in squeezing ground often involves difficult problems, especially in the case of a deep tunnel with high overburden and weak rock conditions. Following an outline of the fundamental mechanisms of squeezing as well as its identification and ground deformation characteristics, a yielding principle for tunneling under squeezing rock conditions is introduced and some key points for design and installation of the yielding supports are presented.
