Abstract The construction of the Taoshuping tunnel passing through water-rich fine sandstone stratum was difficult, especially the upward transition section from the inclined shaft to the main tunnel. Based on a comparison of four schemes in regards to construction consequence, support pattern, and system changes, the selected final option was to excavate a pilot tunnel from the inclined shaft to the upper part of the main tunnel and then construct the heading and middle part. The four comparative schemes are introduced and their effects are presented.
