Abstract Considering the absence of a theoretical basis for design loads for multi-arch tunnels, appropriate parameters were selected and reasonable calculation models built based on the load calculation formula for normally separated tunnels. The character of the "loose zone" and appropriate load values for a four-lane multi-arch tunnel were established, and the formula of load calculation was developed from pure empirical deduction to semi-empirical deduction with more definite theoretical basis. Results indicate that the design load basically agrees with the measured one.
