Abstract Ecological environments are affected by continuous drainage from tunnels, which may cause disputes in some cases. A dynamic monitoring system for the groundwater environment in a karst tunnel area is established, and the monitored scope, layout of points, index, monitoring time interval and frequency are described in detail. Using the Tongluoshan tunnel on the Dianjiang-Linshui expressway as an example, the following conclusions were made based on the feedback information related to water quality and volume during the construction: 1) natural water is mainly replenished by atmospheric precipitation; 2) water inflow is composed of karst water and fissure groundwater, and 3) the groundwater environment at the middle of the tunnel and 1km away from the tunnel axis is affected by tunnel drainage to some extent.
