Abstract Running tunnel on Xi'an metro Line 2 under-crosses the city wall, the effect of the construction on national historical relics is the crucial issue to be addressed. Countermeasures to ground subsidence and construction deformation monitoring scheme concerning the shield driving of upline-tunnel under-crossing city wall were formulated. Monitoring results showed that ground settlements were dependent on many factors and their interaction during shield tunneling. In the course of shield tunneling, grouting must be simultaneous and sufficient, and suplemenary grouting must be conducted timely. With advancing of tunnel, soil pressures need to be adjusted constantly in order to adapt to the change of strata.  Now the tunnel has already passed through the city wall, which indicates that the control measures of ground subsidence and monitoring scheme are reasonable and feasible.
