Abstract The construction of the West Qinling extra-long railway tunnel was very difficult since the geological structure of the surrounding rock is complex, the fault is developed, and it is located in a zone under high ground stress. Stable excavation was achieved during the construction passing through the fault and fracture zone thanks to advance geological forecasting, monitoring and measuring, pre-support with small pipes, curtain grouting, and three-bench blasting, all of which prevented any collapsing.
