Abstract Nowadays the shield construction method is widely applied in the urban metro projects. The success of shield tunnelling is directly related to the stratum conditions that the tunnel passes through, especially at the shield-launching end. It is unfavorable for shield tunnelling if the upper stratum is soft and the lower stratum is hard. Using a slurry shield launching in these conditions for the Guangzhou Metro Line 9 as an example, this paper studies the method of building multiple shafts at the ground surface, through which the hard rock can be removed safely and rapidly at the shield-launching end while avoiding ground strengthening treatments.
