Abstract Xinzhai tunnel is embedded in fold system of West Qinling with developed joints and broken rocks. The entrance section of it locates on the left margin of landslip with a minimum overburden of 13~18m, and a gully was developed at the left side of tunnel portal. It is difficult for the safe construction under the condition of uneven pressure, shallow overburden and soft rock. The whole working process has been recorded, analyzed and summarized in detail based on the  Xinzhai tunnel practice with experience accumulated to serve guidance for similar projects.
