Abstract For the first time, the alternated construction technique is applied to a shield-driven tunnel in a water-abundant sandy pebble stratum. In order to avoid sizeable ground settlements and damage to roads and pipelines after shield driving, the information oriented construction techniques of shield driving control, ground grouting reinforcement, pipe-jacking grouting reinforcement and construction monitoring were applied. These measures proved to be effective and successful.
