Abstract Based on the engineering practice of a new tunnel crossing an existing railway tunnel with short distance, this article analyzes such restricted conditions as external factors, engineering geology, and supporting structure of the existing railway tunnel. It presents three schemes; makes a comprehensive comparison of numerical analyses, engineering features, and requirements; and ultimately recommends and open-cut tunnel scheme.
