Abstract The construction of the Jieling Tunnel on the Yiba Expressway was behind schedule due to complicated geological conditions that required prolonged treatments of collapse areas. In this case it was decided to add horizontal adits in order to modify the exposed working face. In this article, the two schemes of construction technology for horizontal adits are introduced and an analysis and comparison of the schemes of vertical passing and curved transition are addressed in terms of technical feasibility and economic viability.
