Abstract Taking the "602" karst cavity encountered in the construction of Yeshanguan tunnel on Yichang-Wanzhou railway for example, the paper systematically describes the comprehensive construction techniques of deep tunnels passing through large karst cavity with rich water, namely the energy releasing and pressure reduction techniques including locating, identifying, locking, disclosing and treating karst cavities, as well as safety construction techniques for passing through cavities including discharge adits excavation, information-oriented grouting, supporting, long-term monitoring and safety evaluation.
